What is a drill bit used for?

What are the two main types of drill bit?

Drill bit classification is according to the material they are manufactured from and the applied coating.

1. High-Speed Steel (HSS) bits are used for drilling wood, light metals, fiberglass and PVC.

2.  Black oxide-coated drill bits resist rust and  they are more durable than HSS.

Can you resharpen drill bits?

There are all kinds of complicated jigs and gadgets out there for sharpening bits. Drill bits are actually quite easy to sharpen by hand, therefor if you get it wrong at first, the worst that can happen is that you grind away a few millimetres of the bit until you get it right.

What does HSS mean?

A common misconception (yes really) about this designation on a drill bit is that it allows you to run the bit at maximum speed. This is incorrect. Well-balanced in toughness, abrasion resistance and hardness for general purpose usage are charactristics of HSS.

You should select your drilling speed according to the diameter of the bit being used, smaller sizes (up to 6mm can be run faster and sizes from 6 upwards work best with much reduced speeds, Always let the bit do the work, do not exert force when drilling as this will lead to overheating and premature wear.
