What router bits do I need as a beginner?
If you're assembling a starter set, consider buying a couple of straight bits (maybe 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4"); a few round-over bits (1/8" and 1/4"); a rabbeting bit with interchangeable bearings of different sizes; a 45º chamfer bit; and an ogee bit.
How do I choose a router bit set?
General appearance: A well-made bit has cutting edges that gleam and display no gaps where those edges are brazed to the bit body. Be sure the cutting edges are free of tiny chips.
Size: Choose bits with 1/2" shanks if your router accepts that size or go with 1/4" if not.
What are the most commonly used router bits?
Groove cutting bits might be some of the most commonly used router bits. These bits are for cutting grooves, dados and rabbets. They can also be used for clearing waste for inlays and even flush trimming.
