With the new Tormek MB-100 Multi Base, you can now sharpen on the side of the Tormek Diamond Wheels, thus creating a completely flat bevel that is preferable in some applications.
The MB-100 has an adjustment line that allows you to fix the sharpening position based on the optimal setting for each tool and jig. For convenience, it can be mounted either vertically or horizontally.
The Tormek MB-100 Multi-Base can be used with the following Tormek jigs:
- SVM-45 Knife Jig
- SVM-140 Long Knife Jig
- SVM-00 Small Knife Holder
- SVX-150 Scissors Jig
- SVA-170 Axe Jig
- SVS-38 Short Tool Jig
- SVD-186 Gouge Jig
- SVS-50 Multi Jig
- SE-77 Square Edge Jig
- SVD-110 Tool Rest
Setting the Edge Angle:
When setting the sharpening angle with the updated WM-200 AngleMaster, use the top angle scale, marked with MB-100. When setting the sharpening angle with the previous WM-200, add 18° to your preferred angle. For example, if you are going the sharpen a chisel to a 25° angle, add 18° on the AngleMaster, i.e. 43°. Always set the wheel diameter compensator on WM-200 to 250mm when sharpening with the MB-100.
Please note that the MB-100 is only designed for sharpening with Tormek Diamond Wheels. It is not suitable for grinding stones as they would require truing which is not possible on the side.
The new Tormek Diamond Wheels offer an exceptional durability plus the ability to sharpen on the side as well as the periphery.
The new diamond wheels come in three different grades; Coarse, Fine and Extra Fine. The quality of the diamond surface provides a high and constant sharpening ability and a grinding wheel that always remains the full size in diameter. Users who frequently sharpen the same tool will benefit greatly from this feature as it simplifies both setting and sharpening.
Diamond is the world's hardest material and almost twice as hard as cubic boron nitride (CBN), which is another commonly used abrasive. The diamond's extreme hardness and durability make it the optimal material for sharpening.
Another great aspect of the diamond wheels is that the wheels have a diamond layer on the side, perfect for the sharpening of small carving tools such as carving gouges and V-tools plus plane irons, wood chisels and knives. The result is a bevel edge with a completely flat surface, instead of a hollow grind.
When sharpening on the side of the Diamond Wheels using the new Multi Base MB-100, the user always has support and control using the Tormek jigs. To sharpen either with or without water is another detail which has been made possible with the new diamond wheels. However, Tormek always recommends sharpening with water as it prolongs the life of the wheel and gives a better result.
The Diamond Wheels are complementary to our water cooled sharpening system and will not replace the Tormek Original Grindstone. Each of the Tormek Diamond Wheels is suitable for all types of material, incl. steel, ceramic and carbide.
